Our environmental transport and performance data
Saving fuel is an economical and ecological imperative. It is not just a measure prompted by peaking oil prices. That is best evidenced by the fact that Lufthansa Cargo operates with one of the world’s most modern and lowest emission freighter fleets. Lufthansa connects people around the globe, and furthers the exchange of goods, ideas and cultures. But in order to transport people and essential goods air traffic will depend, for some time yet, on kerosene as its principal energy source.
Lufthansa is aware that combustion of fossil fuels increases carbon emissions in the atmosphere.
That is why saving the earth’s resources is a Lufthansa tradition.
On the one hand Lufthansa Cargo carries airfreight in the holds of its own fleet, consisting of 19 MD11 freighters with an average age of 12 years. On the other hand we use the belly capacities of Lufthansa passenger aircrafts as well.
In the freight transport services laid on by our own MD11 freighters, specific fuel consumption remained on a low level of 170g/tkm in 2009 despite the decline of transported tonnage of freight. Cumulatively by more than 30 percent since 1994 within Lufthansa Cargo.

By the same token, specific CO2 emissions generated by our MD11 freighter fleet were 536g/tkm in 2009. The emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), unburnt hydrocarbons (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions per tkm remained on the previous year’s low level.
